Age factors
Stress can often start in teenage years or the early twenties. It can last a long time. If you look at visits to the GP according to age, it seems that stress most affects both men and women in the age group 25 - 44. But even in the age range 45-64, stress remains the most common reason for visiting the GP in women.
- About one in five pre-school children has a mental health problem - most will be stress-related.
- About one in seven teenagers will have a mental health problem - again, most will be stress-related.
- About one in seven people over the age of 65 will have depression.
