What causes psychosis?
Experts argue that a good theory about how the mind works needs to explain 3 things. One of these things is called our biology. For example, how do our 100 billion brain cells produce the mind? Another thing is our psychology. For example, how do our thoughts change the way we feel? Another thing to be explained is the effect of social factors. An example of a social factor is poverty. How are people affected by this? A theory that answers all these sorts of questions would be called a biopsychosocial theory.
Experts agree that one day psychosis will be explained by some sort of bps theory. But they stress that the role of biology, psychology, and social factors will different for everyone. For some people there might be lots of reasons, other people might just have some. For most people it is unlikely there will be one single cause.
